I do a big food shopping once a month, and just buy milk, eggs, and bread as we use them. As you can see in the picture, right now my pantry is full. It's overflowing, actually, because I couldn't even fit all the groceries in there. My fridge and freezer look like this right now, too.
I have become somewhat of a price expert when I grocery shop. Junior (my husband) and I go to four different stores, and buy their sales. I never, ever pay full price for meat. I only buy what is marked down, or if it is a really good sale. For instance, my favorite meat is London Broil, but I hardly ever buy it, because it is expensive. This month, a local store had it on sale, so I bought a couple. Ground beef and chicken are easy to find on sale, so I always have those in my freezer as well.
I learned a long time ago from my mom to always watch the register as things ring up. It seems like every time I shop, there are mistakes. It's easier to have them fixed before paying than after, so I watch closely.
I recently started clipping coupons, and they do save some money, but I still find buying the store brand is usually cheaper. Most things I am not too picky about, and there are even a few things I like better in the store brand.
Not beans, though. I am a stickler for Bush's.

You are stocked up! I never have had London broil. I know it is beef. What kind of cut is it? How do you fix it?
Um, I have no idea what kind of cut it is...I just know it's a nice, thick steak. My mom always broils it in the oven, which is delicious. I also like to cut mine into thin strips and make a beef and broccoli dish on the stove. You can find the post I did about it here: http://feedingmyfamilyoffive.blogspot.com/search/label/beef
It also cooks really well on the grill. If I'm grilling it, though, I will marinate it in an italian dressing, and last week, my sister used a spicy rub on it when we grilled out, and that was good too. This is the only steak I ever buy, or eat for that matter.
We go once every two weeks. Its gotten real hard since hubby lost his job. Cupons don't help us. We buy store brand, and we've never found a coupon sale that beats store brand prices.
When I was working, we used to go every 2 weeks or there about. Now that I am retired I go every other day, sometimes more.
Yummy ~ I am sorry to hear your husband is still out of work. Have you guys thought about getting some assistance? There's nothing wrong with asking for help when you need it. Is Parker eating regular food yet?
Da Dude ~ when my husband and I both worked (I work from home now) it seemed like we did better when we went to the store several times a week to get the fixings for dinner. Now that I am home alot, I like having everything at my fingertips, so no matter what I decide to make, it's all right here.
Do you plan you meals?
We do our shopping every two weeks because that is when I get paid. I'm a big coupon clipper and I try to always get half of my grocery bill off with coupons. Your pantry is so organized how wonderful. Mine doesn't look so good.
I don't plan my meals, per say. I shop first, and whatever is on sale becomes my meals. Make sense? I am really trying to do the coupon thing, but I always spend more because I buy the name brands instead of the store brand. I am loving all the coupons I am finding by "liking" stuff on Facebook, though.
